World AIDS Day highlights the success of worldwide efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, as well as the importance of continued support for these efforts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that global efforts have resulted in 18.2 million people receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV infection as of June 2016, compared to 7.5 million at the end of 2010. Despite this progress, HIV/AIDS continues to be a significant global public health issue. According to CDC, an estimated 36.7 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS. Each year, more than 1 million people die from AIDS-related causes and 2.1 million people become newly infected by HIV.
